The purpose of this article is to point out in a revisional and refined way how the resolution of mathematical problems contributes to the process of teaching and learning mathematics by students of basic education. Mathematical education is one of the scientific areas that aims to study the teaching of mathematics and adapt mathematical models to the needs of students with a view to their development. The use of mathematics is too old, and over the years it has been used for various purposes, from solving situations and everyday problems, even for warlike use. However, in the field of mathematics teaching, many challenges have been and still are to be overcome, as it is not a basic and necessary knowledge. This article addresses issues related to critical mathematics education (EMC) and innovations in mathematics classes, using them as pillars to promote mathematical education in the teaching-learning process. Therefore, it is understandable that schools should use creativity, initiative, critical thinking and the ability to discover new, united and clear aspects to attract students, including: mathematical modeling, problem solving and ethnic mathematics, in order to provide a good environment where the subject himself can become the protagonist of learning.
